Glossary for Pajama Terms
Posted by LazyOne on 10th Jun 2025
So many pajamas, so little time—and so many terms to keep track of! From flaps to footies and flannel to fleece, it’s enough to make your head spin. But don’t worry—we’ve stitched together this cozy glossary to keep you from getting pajamboozled.
Why Are There So Many Pajama Terms?
Well, when it comes to sleepwear, humans have gotten really creative over the years. Blame it on our deep love for comfort, our obsession with cute names, or just the fact that pajamas have been around for centuries and everyone wanted to leave their cozy mark. From the Victorian-era nightgown to the modern-day Hoodeez, every generation—and every brand—has added their own spin (and snazzy name) to the pajama party. So yeah, it’s not just jammies anymore. There’s a whole bedtime dictionary out there!
Here's a quick breakdown of some of the most popular pajama terms:
- Combed Cotton
Think of combed cotton like a spa day for your cotton fibers. It’s smoother, softer, and stronger—basically the superhero version of regular cotton. That’s why we love using it in our jammies. Because your skin deserves the soft life. - Flapjacks – Butt Flap PJs – Long Johns
Our claim to (rear-end) fame. These one-piece wonders feature a functional flap on the back for… well, let’s call it “easy exits.” Once used for chilly outhouse runs, now perfect for Christmas card-level cuteness. Our Flapjacks are made with 100% combed cotton and button closures—because we like to keep things cheeky and classic. - Flannel
The warm hug of fabrics. Flannel is brushed for buttery softness and used to be made of wool. These days, cotton and synthetics join the party too. Basically, it’s what cozy dreams are made of. - Fleece
Fleece feels like hugging a cloud made of marshmallows and sheep. Usually made from polyester (not baaaaad!), it’s warm, fuzzy, and basically the MVP of winter naps. - Footed Pajamas – Footsies – Footies
Like wearing a blanket from neck to toe. These full-body PJs have built-in feet (so you’re never sockless again), and sometimes even a hood. Made for infants, adults, and everyone in between. Warning: once you try them, you may never go back to pants. - Jiffy Grip – Non-Skid Stuff – Traction Dots
The polka dots that save your hiney. Found on the soles of footie pajamas and slippers, these rubber grips keep your midnight snack missions from becoming wipeouts. On our Hoodeez, we even made ‘em shaped like our logo. Functional and fashionable? Check. - Nightshirts – Nightgowns
Long, comfy, and great for twirling before bed. Once the peak of nighttime fashion in the 1800s, these classics still tuck us in today. Ours are 100% combed cotton—flannel if you’re feelin’ fancy. - One-Piece Pajamas
Top meets bottom in a single sleepy swoop. Whether it’s a Hoodeez, Flapjack, or footie, one-piece pajamas are a no-gap, no-draft, all-cozy kind of deal. Perfect for staying snug as a bug from chin to shin. - Onesie – Infant Creeper – Romper
Okay, okay, you’ve heard it all before. But here’s the deal: “onesie” started as a trademarked baby term from Gerber (think diaper snaps and chubby legs). Now it’s a cozy catch-all for any one-piece PJ—infants, adults, even dogs (don’t tempt us). Rompers have legs, creepers don’t, but either way, adorable. - Sweats – Joggers
Is it loungewear? Is it sleepwear? Who cares—it’s comfy. Once gym gear, now bedtime essentials. These cozy pants are soft, stretchy, and made for marathon snoozing, not sprinting. - Tanks & Shorts
Warm nights? No problem. These lightweight sets are great for catching Zzz’s without breaking a sweat. Think soft tanks, breezy shorts, and zero bedtime complaints. - Two-Piece Pajamas – Classic PJs – Tailored Sets
Ah, the classy pajama duo. Born in the 1900s and made iconic by silver screen legends, this set says, “Yes, I nap—but I do it with style.” - Union Suit
Meet Flapjack’s zipper-happy cousin. Originally invented for ladies as an escape from corset chaos, the union suit is now a unisex favorite. Ours feature cozy one-piece styling with zipper fronts and no flap on the back. (So maybe a bit less cheeky, but just as comfy.)
